Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 27 October 2023, at Long Beach airport (LGB), California, there was a near mid-air collision between Hawaiian Airlines flight 70 (HAL70, an Airbus A321 registered N2165HA) and a Cessna 172 light aircraft (N24CV), over the point where runway 30 and the final approach path to runway 26L intersect. At the time a single controller was working the tower, assist and ground positions combined. He turned the Cessna onto the base leg for 26L and cleared it to land a mile from the runway and, almost simultaneously, cleared the Hawaiian flight to land on 30 while it was on a four-mile final. He did not notice that the Cessna extended half a mile further before turning, so both reached the intersection of the two runways at almost the same moment. In the preceding three minutes, several ground calls asking for a tow and a discussion with the traffic flow unit had distracted him from the tower operation. Source: the NTSB (United States).
