Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at Los Angeles, California

What happened
On 13 August 2018, at about 16:45 Pacific time, Hawaiian Airlines flight 56, an Airbus A321 (N204HA), suffered a tail strike while landing at Los Angeles (LAX), arriving from Kahului, Hawaii. None of the 197 occupants was hurt, but the aircraft was left with structural damage. On the ILS approach to runway 6R, at around 1,500 feet, a «GPWS Fail» message appeared on the ECAM; the crew disconnected the ground proximity system and continued. Passing about 50 feet, the first officer — who was flying — noticed the automatic radio altimeter height calls were missing, but had no time to react. The aircraft touched down firmly, bounced and raised the nose until the tail struck the runway, deforming skin, stringers and aft frames. They were flying over calm water, whose effect on the radio altimeter the manufacturer had already warned about. Source: the NTSB (United States).

What happened
The COVID-19 pandemic brought much of world aviation to a halt in 2020: as demand collapsed, thousands of aircraft sat parked for weeks or months. The extent and the dates varied a great deal from country to country and from airline to airline. This record is based on evidence FOR THIS AIRCRAFT (documented parking and gaps in its flight logbook). Source: BTS (United States Department of Transportation).
