Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at Charlotte, North Carolina
On August 15, 2015, the Airbus A321 aircraft (registration N564UW), operated by American Airlines, was involved in an accident at Charlotte, North Carolina (United States). Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
The flight was descending to land on runway 36L at Charlotte (CLT) with full flaps, passing through scattered rain cells. Air traffic control had passed a wind shear advisory about 12 minutes earlier and, roughly a minute and a half before the attempt, a wind shear alert based on a pilot report of a 20-knot airspeed loss on the approach. The captain did not consult the wind shear guidance in the quick reference handbook, which recommended landing with flaps 3 and adding 15 knots to the speed; he approached with full flaps and no additive at all. About 7 seconds from touchdown, on short final, the aircraft passed through a small microburst, with the wind going from headwind to tailwind and back to headwind. The captain began a go-around after the aircraft's aural wind shear alert, but it lost speed and lift and landed hard, with a tail strike, before it could climb away. It was then vectored to runway 36C, where it landed without incident. Source: the NTSB (United States).
