Brothers Gaston and Albert Tissandier lift off from Auteuil, Paris, in an airship driven by a battery-powered Siemens electric motor: the first electric flight in history. It made only a few kilometres an hour against the wind, but enough to steer the craft. A hundred and forty years later, aviation is looking at electricity again.

1908Milestone Griffith Brewer, the first Briton to fly as a passenger
At Camp d’Auvours near Le Mans, Wilbur Wright takes balloonist Griffith Brewer up as a passenger: the first Briton to fly in an aeroplane. Brewer will later become the Wrights’ representative in England.

The KhAI-1 of the Kharkiv Aviation Institute flies, an exceptionally clean passenger aircraft: the first European transport aircraft with retractable undercarriage; Aeroflot would put it into service.

At Woodley the Somers-Kendall SK-1 (G-AOBG) flies, a wooden two-seat racer with a V-tail and a small Turbomeca Palas turbojet above the fuselage.

The RFB Fanliner takes off, the German two-seater with a ducted fan and a Porsche engine.
1998Milestone Fornebu closes, Gardermoen opens
Oslo’s Fornebu airport closes after 59 years and all traffic moves to the new Gardermoen.
2001Accident The Linate collision
In the fog at Milan, a light aircraft enters the runway by mistake and the SAS MD-87 hits it in the middle of its take-off run: 118 lives lost. It reformed surface markings and ground control in Europe.
