At San Diego, Charles Lindbergh takes the Spirit of St. Louis into the air for the first time, the monoplane Ryan had built for him in two months. With no forward windscreen, a periscope to see ahead and fuel tanks where the passenger would have sat, it was a petrol tank with wings. Three weeks later it would cross the Atlantic.
