Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 17 October 2012, at about 11:19 local time, a Bombardier DHC-8-315 registered N800AW, operated by the United States Department of State, suffered a hard landing on runway 29 at Kabul International Airport, Afghanistan. Its six occupants — three passengers and three crew — were unhurt, but the aircraft was left with significant damage. Arriving from Tarin Kowt, the flight was normal until, because of the airport's threat level, the crew flew a very steep random approach with the engines at idle, without applying power again before touchdown. With a descent rate of about 2,000 feet per minute, the aircraft touched down about 8 degrees nose-up at 2.7 g maximum vertical acceleration, and the rear fuselage struck the runway, bending and cracking frames and stringers. The crew had disabled the ground proximity warning to avoid nuisance alerts on that approach. Source: the NTSB (United States).
