Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
The Embraer 190 was operating flight 8243 from Baku to Grozny, in Chechnya, when something struck it in flight over Russian territory. The crew set the emergency code 7700 while over the Caspian Sea and diverted towards Aktau, in Kazakhstan, more than 400 kilometres from its destination. The aircraft crashed during the final approach. Of the 67 people on board, 38 died; 29 survived. The cause was the subject of conflicting accounts from the first day. Preliminary reports from the Russian aviation agency pointed to a bird strike, but survivors described an explosion and shrapnel entering the cabin. Euronews reported the following day, citing Azerbaijani government sources, that a Russian surface-to-air missile had hit the aircraft while air defences were repelling a Ukrainian drone attack on Grozny. The New York Times added that Azerbaijani investigators attributed the damage to a Pantsir-S1 system. On 28 December, Russian president Vladimir Putin apologised to his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev for the «tragic incident» that occurred in Russian airspace, without acknowledging responsibility. The next day Aliyev stated that Russia had shot the aircraft down accidentally and demanded a full admission of guilt.
