Accident at Los Rodeos Airport, Tenerife

On December 3, 1972, the Convair CV-990-30A-5 Coronado aircraft (registration EC-BZR), operated by Spantax, was involved in a fatal accident at Los Rodeos Airport, Tenerife (Spain), leaving 155 dead. Source: Spantax.

What happened

A charter full of German tourists took off from Los Rodeos, in the north of Tenerife, for Munich with low cloud over the runway and visibility of about 150 metres. At a height of about 90 metres the aircraft banked, struck the ground with its left wing just beyond the end of the runway and crashed. All 155 people on board died. The inquiry attributed it to the captain's spatial disorientation on a take-off without visual references.
