Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 8 June 2022, on approach to Tulsa (TUL), Oklahoma, the crew of FedEx flight 1170 mistook runway 18R for 18L and landed on 18R. After touchdown, on hearing the automatic «3,000 feet remaining» call, the captain realised the error, braked hard and managed to exit at the last taxiway. They were flying in visual conditions, with enough external cues to tell the two parallel runways apart. The first officer saw that the electronic glideslope, set for 18L, looked «normal», but was uneasy that the 18R PAPI lights showed them «low», because of the runways' displaced thresholds. Although FedEx's rules required the approach to be backed up with the ILS, the crew disregarded what their instruments showed — deflected to the left — and trusted the runway already in sight, with no further checks. The NTSB attributed it to plan continuation bias, aggravated by fatigue and circadian disruption. Source: the NTSB (United States).
