Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 21 November 2013, the crew had briefed a visual approach to runway 19L at McConnell airport (KIAB), Wichita, backed up by the RNAV/GPS approach to that runway, but ended up landing by mistake at the nearby Jabara airport (KAAO). Approach Control cleared them for the RNAV/GPS procedure to 19L; passing some 12 miles (about 19 km) north of KIAB — and only 4.6 miles (about 7 km) north of KAAO — the tower cleared them to land on 19L. Both pilots saw a well-lit runway where they expected KIAB, accepted it, disconnected the autopilot, abandoned the RNAV approach and descended somewhat more steeply than normal, without cross-checking their position against the on-board navigation again. They did not notice the error until after touchdown, on seeing the runway shorter than expected and unfamiliar surroundings. Source: the NTSB (United States).
