Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at Manchester Airport
On August 22, 1985, the Boeing 737-236 aircraft (registration G-BGJL), operated by British Airtours, was involved in a fatal accident at Manchester Airport (United Kingdom), leaving 55 dead. Source: British Airtours.
What happened
A combustor can in the left engine broke up during the take-off roll, punctured the wing tank and fire engulfed the fuselage in the minute it took the aircraft to stop. 55 of the 137 people on board died, almost all from smoke. No other accident has changed the cabin as much: floor lighting, fire-blocking seats, more room beside the emergency exits and a new approach to evacuation training.
