Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at Madrid-Barajas Airport
On December 7, 1983, the Boeing 727-256 aircraft (registration EC-CFJ), operated by Iberia, was involved in a fatal accident at Madrid-Barajas Airport (Spain), leaving 51 dead. Source: Iberia.
What happened
Ten days after the Avianca crash, an Aviaco DC-9 taxiing in fog at Barajas took the wrong taxiway and entered the runway from which an Iberia 727 was taking off for Rome. All 42 people on the DC-9 died, and 51 on the 727. There was no ground radar and no signage adequate for fog like that. Madrid installed surface radar and redesigned its taxiways.
