Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 24 July 2001, the Airbus A340 registered 4R-ADD of SriLankan Airlines was at Bandaranaike International Airport, Colombo, when, before dawn, a suicide squad of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) stormed the terminal and the adjacent air base. The attackers destroyed several parked aircraft with explosives and small arms; 4R-ADD was destroyed. As the aircraft was empty there were no casualties on board. The attack paralysed the country's main airport and hit the airline hard. Source: SriLankan Airlines.
