Also: design service goal, design life, limit of validity, structural life
The period of use, measured in cycles, flight hours and years, over which the manufacturer has shown that an aircraft's structure withstands fatigue.
To establish it, the manufacturer puts a complete airframe that will never fly through far more load and pressurisation cycles on the ground than it would see in service. The results set the design service goal and the programme of structural inspections. Regulators also require a limit of validity for that engineering data, which can be extended through further testing and analysis.
In practice, most airliners are retired for economic rather than structural reasons: they burn more fuel than newer types, an expensive heavy check is looming, or their parts are worth more separately. Many leave passenger service at between 20 and 30 years old, though some fly on for much longer, often as freighters, and a few DC-3s built in the 1940s are still flying.
Where known, an aircraft's record shows its date of manufacture and its age.
