Smaller passenger aircraft, typically with about 30 to 100 seats, designed for short routes and airports with modest traffic.
Regional aircraft link small and medium-sized cities with each other or with major hubs, often on flights of under two hours. There are two broad groups: turboprops such as the ATR 72 and Dash 8, which are very efficient on short sectors, and regional jets such as Bombardier's CRJ family and Embraer's ERJ 145 and E-Jets, which are faster and suit somewhat longer routes.
In the United States, many of these flights are operated by regional airlines under a major carrier's brand through capacity purchase agreements. The mainline pilots' contracts, known as scope clauses, limit the seat count and weight of aircraft those partners may fly, which goes a long way to explaining the success of the Embraer E175 in that market.
