Popular nickname for the Boeing 747, the first wide-body airliner, sometimes applied to other very large passenger aircraft.
The name was born with the Boeing 747, whose sheer size astonished the public when it entered service in 1970: it more than doubled the capacity of the largest jets of the day, and its hump, housing the flight deck and an upper deck, made it unmistakable. The word itself comes from Jumbo, a celebrated nineteenth-century circus elephant whose name came to mean anything huge.
The 747 brought down the cost of long-haul travel and helped popularise international tourism. Boeing built it for more than five decades in passenger, freighter and combi versions, and most examples of the final model, the 747-8, were built as freighters. The Airbus A380, the largest passenger aircraft ever built, with two full-length decks, is sometimes called a jumbo too.
The Boeing 747 model page on Vuelopedia sets out its history, specifications, variants and fleet.
