Cabin retrofit

Manufacturing and maintenance

The renewal of an in-service aircraft's interior with new seats, entertainment, lighting or a different layout of cabin classes.

What it is

Airlines retrofit cabins to keep up to date an aircraft that will fly for twenty years or more, to offer the same product across the whole fleet, or to change what they sell, for example by adding premium economy or lie-flat business-class seats. The total seat count sometimes changes as well.

New items must be certified. Seats have to pass dynamic crash tests, and the installation is approved through manufacturer service bulletins or supplemental type certificates. To cut time on the ground, airlines usually schedule the work during a heavy check, and a full fleet programme can run for years.

The industry distinguishes a retrofit, carried out on existing aircraft, from line-fit, where the equipment is installed on the production line.
