Operating Empty Weight · Also: operating empty weight, operating weight empty, basic operating weight
Weight of an aircraft ready for service, with crew, equipment and the necessary fluids, but without passengers, cargo or usable fuel.
OEW starts from the aircraft as the manufacturer delivers it, with its structure, engines, systems, cabin and unusable fluids, and adds everything the airline needs to operate it: the crew and their baggage, drinking water, catering equipment, documents and emergency equipment. That is why two aircraft of the same model can have different OEWs.
It is the foundation of all weight planning. Subtract it from the MZFW and you have the maximum payload; subtract it from the MTOW and you have what is left to share between payload and fuel. Every kilogram saved on OEW, through lighter seats or composite materials, can become more passengers, more cargo or lower fuel burn.
As an order of magnitude, an Airbus A320neo has an OEW of about 44 tonnes, more than half its maximum take-off weight.
