Also: reactivation, release to service, de-storage
An aircraft's return to operation after storage, repair or maintenance, once it has been confirmed as fit to fly.
Strictly speaking, a return to service is the signature with which certifying staff confirm, at the end of a maintenance job, that the aircraft meets the requirements and may fly. More loosely, the phrase is used above all for aircraft coming back after a long spell in storage.
Reactivating a stored aircraft means undoing the preservation work, removing covers and blanks, checking systems and structure, completing any maintenance that fell due while it was parked and often flying a check flight. Depending on how long it has been out of action, the process can take anything from a few days to several months.
The Airbus A380 offers a well-known example: several airlines that had stored their aircraft for years later brought them back to meet rising demand.
Returns to service appear among the recorded events in an aircraft's record.
