Also: museum aircraft, heritage aircraft, gate guardian
A retired aircraft kept intact for its historical value, in a museum, on public display or, in some cases, in flying condition.
Preservation rescues aircraft with a special story from the scrapheap: prototypes, the first examples of a type, record-breakers and machines that came to symbolise an airline. Most end up as static exhibits in museums; others stand as gate guardians at airports and other sites, and some are used to train engineers and crews.
Keeping an aircraft airworthy is far more demanding, requiring continuous maintenance, spare parts and qualified crews. Even so, a number of historic DC-3s still take to the skies at air shows.
Well-known examples include the first Boeing 747, at the Museum of Flight in Seattle; the A380 with serial number 2, at the Air and Space Museum at Le Bourget near Paris; and several Concordes in museums across Europe and the United States.
