Flag carrier

Airlines and business

Airline historically identified with a particular country, often founded or part-owned by its government, and representing that country on international routes.

What it is

The term dates from the era when international traffic rights were traded in bilateral agreements between governments, each of which designated a carrier, frequently state-owned, to use them. That airline often wore the national colours or flag in its livery and acted as the country's ambassador abroad.

From the late twentieth century onwards, many flag carriers were wholly or partly privatised, and the liberalisation of air transport blurred the idea. Even so, the expression is still used for a country's long-established national airline, whether publicly or privately owned.

Examples include Iberia in Spain, KLM in the Netherlands, Qantas in Australia and TAP Air Portugal. Some still have the state as a shareholder; others are now private companies within larger airline groups.
