Deregistration

Also: registration cancellation, cancelled registration, struck off the register

Registration and rules

Cancellation of an aircraft's entry on a state's register, for example because it is exported to another country, withdrawn from use or scrapped.

What it is

Aircraft are removed from a register for many reasons: export to another country, retirement and scrapping, destruction, or simply at the owner's request. Because no aircraft can be registered in two states at once, the new register usually requires proof of deregistration from the previous one before issuing a new mark.

Deregistration does not necessarily mean the aircraft has gone. Many stored aircraft keep their registration for years, while others lose it as they wait for a new operator. Finding out what became of a deregistered aircraft means looking at its history: whether it was exported, re-registered, preserved in a museum or broken up for parts.
