Agreement under which an airline sells seats, under its own code and flight number, on a flight operated by another carrier.
On a codeshare flight, the operating carrier provides the aircraft and crew, while one or more marketing carriers sell tickets under their own codes. The same departure can therefore appear on airport screens with several different flight numbers.
Codesharing lets an airline offer destinations it does not serve with its own aircraft and sell connecting journeys on a single ticket, with bags checked through to the final destination. It underpins many alliances and joint ventures, and is also common between major airlines and their regional partners: in the United States, United Express flights operated by SkyWest Airlines are sold under United's UA code.
Consumer protection rules in many countries require passengers to be told, before they buy, which airline will actually operate the flight.
